I reached the chapter of Umar Ibn Khattab's conversion to Islam in Martin Lings's excellent book, Muhammad, yesterday. Umar's story - about how the most stubborn of heart can mellow - never fails to touch me.
Incidentally I also read Hamza Yusuf's Purification of the Heart recently, a work of translation & commentary of Imam Al-Mawlud's Matharat Al-Qulub. It argues that all the trials & tribulations in this world stemmed from the diseases of the heart, & if one wants to change one's condition, start by changing the condition of the inward.
Indeed.
